By George! Confined City Site Demands Kingspan Façade Solution

08 Dec 2006

The Kingframe Architectural Façade System from Kingspan Off-Site has come to the rescue in yet another confined city centre residential development. The St George’s Close development in Sheffield comprises 963 student bedrooms and 160 residential apartments in four new eight-storey buildings, surrounded by closely-neighbouring houses.

A Kingframe façade was the ideal solution to close off the buildings several times quicker than blockwork or stickbuild with no need for scaffolding. This enabled following trades to get onsite much sooner to continue their work and accelerated overall project completion – crucial on a project of this size.

Approved Installer SIAC Façades specified the Kingframe through-wall system, which incorporated a steel frame, Kingspan Kooltherm® K15 Rainscreen Board, cement particle board and rainscreen carrier bases. The panels had door and window openings and lifting eyes fitted at the point of manufacture at Kingspan’s factory in Sherburn, Yorkshire.

The panels were secured into steel containers for delivery direct to site, where they were individually craned out of the container and fitted directly to the steel structure. The empty container was then removed as a new delivery arrived, resulting in zero packaging waste and minimal onsite storage requirements – not to mention no disruption to surrounding homes.

Phil Wood, SIAC director, commented: “As a Kingspan Off-Site Approved Installer and fellow innovator, SIAC is keen to work with partners to maximise the benefits of off-site solutions. Specifying the Kingframe Façade System for St George’s Close will save us weeks of installation time and allow us to meet both intermediate and completion deadlines with confidence.”

The St George’s Close project will be finished in an attractive combination of composite Optimo panels, aluminium rainscreen and ventilated render façade, and is scheduled for handover in autumn 2007. Meanwhile, the Kingframe Architectural Façade System has already proven a success in the construction of academic, commercial and residential units across the UK, demonstrating the significant time and cost savings and certainty of build programme that can be achieved by its specification.
