Kingspan in the Frame for Key Worker Housing

08 Dec 2006

Construction of a key worker and social housing development in Hornsey Street, London, is moving on apace thanks in no small part to the specification of Kingframe Wall Framing Systems from Kingspan Off-Site, commissioned and installed by Kingspan Approved Installer MPG Facades.

Wall framing is the natural evolution of stickbuild, or stud and track. Kingframe Wall Framing Systems are rapid build, non-loadbearing systems that support the wall elements and integrate with building services. They are assembled in Kingspan’s ISO9000-compliant manufacturing facilities using galvanised ‘C’ sections to create bespoke frame assemblies, and feature Kingspan’s unique flush-faced connection method. This guarantees that the connections have no steps or offsets, providing a completely flat surface for the fixing of internal and external linings and ensuring a more airtight fit and smoother appearance.

Kingframe Wall Framing Systems offer a lightweight, cost-effective solution for new build residential projects up to any height, and have been key to meeting deadlines on the eight-storey Hornsey Street project. The 105 flats are for key workers and social housing and are being completed to “Lifetime Homes” standards – a design blueprint that creates highly accessible and adaptable housing to Building Regulations standards.

Following factory assembly the frames were delivered direct to site according to the installation schedule, craned into place on the structure and then fitted and fixed by MPG’s installation team within minutes. Wall framing enables earlier access for following trades and ultimately quicker occupation and payback.

Mark Wooding, senior contracts manager at MPG Facades, explained: “At Hornsey Street, Kingframe wall framing was considerably quicker and easier to install than stud and track, and we can have confidence in the dimensional accuracy of the factory-assembled frames. On a building of this size the knock-on effect on time savings is significant.”

Wall frames are suitable for use with practically any exterior façade. Much of the Hornsey Street development has already been finished in an attractive, durable combination of sto render, NBK terracotta rainscreen and red cedar timber weather board.
