Kingspan Lighthouse shines on Chicago’s international stage

28 Oct 2008

The Kingspan Lighthouse has won a distinguished international award for its innovative architectural design. Founded by The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design in conjunction with The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, the International Architecture Awards highlight excellence in the design of new buildings.

In total, buildings from 38 countries, were recognised in the 2008 awards which were judged by a panel of prominent architects alongside the American Institute of Architects. The Kingspan Lighthouse, has been commended for its novel approach to sustainable design.

Built at BRE’s Innovation Park in Watford, the Kingspan Lighthouse pushed the boundaries of sustainable housing design. The first house to achieve level 6 of the Government’s Code for Sustainable Homes, the Kingspan Lighthouse combines innovative design with the latest renewable technologies to deliver unrivalled levels of efficiency in terms of construction methods, energy and water use and CO2 emissions.

Using Kingspan Off-Site’s TEK Building System, a high performance, SIP-based system which delivers very high levels of thermal efficiency, the Kingspan Lighthouse achieved U-values of 0.11W/m2K. Moreover, the system provided excellent levels of air-tightness and ensured that heat loss in the house was reduced by around two-thirds compared to a standard new house.
