Kingspan Metro Building System - Construction
Overview
The Kingspan Metro Building System is a fully integrated structural frame and envelope system providing project bespoke factory-insulated ‘structure and shell’ solutions. The Kingspan Metro Building System is a warm frame system and has been evaluated for a range of U-values, air-leakage and junction performance to ensure compliance with Building Regulations. Data is available from Kingspan Off-Site for SAP analysis and SBEM.
Foundation & Podium Loadings
As a result of the light weight of the Kingspan Metro Building System, loads applied to the podium or foundation structure are reduced by between 20% and 50% when compared to traditional construction methods. This results in direct financial savings in the support structure. Once the foundation type has been agreed upon, foundation loadings are provided early in the Kingspan Off-Site design program.
Kingspan Off-Site's certificated foundation details have been developed and assessed to minimise thermal bridging and eliminate the risk of mould growth.
Loadbearing Walls
Kingspan Metro Building System load-bearing walls are supplied to site as insulated unitised factory assembled units. Depending on the location of the wall, and its connections details, the external wall finishes may also be factory applied.
Stud to Track Joints
The Kingspan Metro Building System utilises a unique patent applied
for 'full end bearing' connection. This structurally efficient
connection method permits successive wall panels to be built up
over a continuous vertical load path without risk of vertical creep
or settlement.
External Walls
External wall units are designed to accommodate a variety of façade finishes including masonry, rainscreens, direct insulated render, brick slips, insulated panels and Kingspan Fabrik.
Separating Walls
The Kingspan Metro Building System can exceed the fire and acoustic performance requirements of the Building Regulations through the application of double or single leaf walls on a project bespoke specification basis.
Internal Walls
The Kingspan Metro Building System can exceed the fire and acoustic performance requirements of the Building Regulations through the application of single leaf walls on a project bespoke specification basis.
Bracing
Bracing is provided by factory fitted flat steel straps, in crossed pairs, connected diagonally to the frame between the top and bottom track.
Noggins
Noggins are incorporated where required to provide lateral restraint to the studs. Individual noggins can be detailed to provide hard fixing locations for cupboards, basins etc.
Non-Loadbearing Walls
The Kingspan Metro Building System can exceed the fire and acoustic performance requirements of the Building Regulations through the application of single leaf walls on a project bespoke specification basis.
Windows, Doors and Other Apertures
The size and frequency of windows, doors and other apertures influence the design approach, and are addressed on a project bespoke basis. All openings have a flush finish at jamb, cill and lintel positions to facilitate an even plasterboard finish.
Building Services Penetrations
Standard details exist for a variety of penetration and routing options for building services. Main performance integrity considerations are fire, acoustic, thermal and air-tightness. Where an external wall is penetrated, thermal and air-tightness details require detailed consideration at design stage, to ensure a simple build process.
Solar Shading
Building orientation and the avoidance of overheating caused by solar gain is now a key factor in building design. Therefore solar shading and the application of brise soleil solutions must be considered where appropriate. The Kingspan Metro Building System can accommodate most types of passive or active brise soleil or shading solutions.
Intermediate Floors & Ceiling Cassettes
Concrete Deck Floors
Kingspan Multideck floors are incorporated into the Kingspan Metro
Building System. An asymmetrical perimeter channel is bolted to the
top of the loadbearing studs. The floor deck is located and fixed
on to the lower flange of the asymmetric channel. Reinforcement
bars and mesh are positioned to correspond with the design
specification.
Reinforcement ties pass through internal walls at positions aligned with the reinforcement bars to provide structural continuity. Concrete is poured and levelled to the top flange of the perimeter channel.
Steel Cassette Floors
Cassette floors are factory assembled from steel channel joists. A
layer of weather-proofed, walkable T&G chipboard is factory
applied to provide a safe working platform.
Joist to joist connections use countersunk bolts providing a flush finish around the perimeter. Cassettes are factory-fitted with ledger angles to allow accurate levelling and provide temporary seating prior to fixing to walls.
Steel cassette floors using the Kingspan Metro Building System comply with the requirements of the relevant Building Regulations / Standards.
Separating Floors
Construction details are
available for concrete deck and steel cassette separating floors.
Integration of building services within these zones must be
considered taking into account acoustic and fire performance
requirements.
Resilient bars are fixed to the underside of the structure allowing the routing of cables under the floor(s).
Stairways, Stairs & Lifts
The Kingspan Metro Building System is designed for the integration
of most common types of stairs and lifts. These are to be specified
by the design team and indicated on scheme enquiry drawings
including locations, design loadings, dimensions and support
requirements to enable Kingspan engineering staff to determine the
framing and supporting methods to be integrated into the
structure.
Construction Details
Construction details for the Kingspan Metro Building System are
available from the Kingspan Off-Site Technical Department or are
available as a download from the Kingspan Off-Site website (see
rear cover).
Roof System Options
Four types of roof systems are available:
Trussed Roofs - Timber or
Steel;
Traditional trussed roof systems are available
in either timber or steel and may be manufactured to suit any roof
configuration. Both timber and steel trussed roof systems are
available from Kingspan Off-Site.
Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) e.g. Kingspan TEK
Building System;
The Kingspan TEK Building System is ideal for providing “room
in the roof” additional useable space.
Steel Purlins - Gable to Gable;
Steel
purlin gable to gable roof system can be easily integrated into
Kingspan Metro Building System.
Steel Cassette Roofs.
All Kingspan Metro roof systems are designed to accommodate
traditional roof tiles, membrane, metal and green roof external
finishes.
Chimneys, Windcatchers, Light/Ventilation Funnels & Flues
The Kingspan Metro Building System can accommodate any type of roof mounted components. These are to be specified by the design team and indicated on scheme enquiry drawings including locations, dimensions as well as any design loadings and support requirements.
Balconies & Terraces
The Kingspan Metro Building System can accommodate most common types of Juliette, Open, Closed or Winter Garden balconies. These can be recessed, external self-supporting or ladder type. External tied balcony connection methods have been developed which provide structural integrity and minimise thermal bridging.
Parking & Garages
The Kingspan Metro Building System can be applied to mixed developments which have underground parking space built with traditional construction methods. The System solution being utilised from the insulated podium level. Conventional internal or external garages can also be easily incorporated into residential developments.
Door Canopies
All social housing is required by Scheme Development Standards
(SDS) to provide some sort of shelter at entrance doors for its
occupants and visitors. Canopies are to be specified by the
design team and indicated on scheme enquiry drawings including
locations, design loadings, dimensions and support
requirements.
